Small and medium enterprises are central to the Australian economy, accounting for 65% of employment and more than a trillion dollars in GDP. Yet on AI adoption, most remain in the early stages, current estimates suggest only around a quarter have adopted AI in any form, with a smaller number using it broadly across their operations.

This October, Tech Council of Australia in partnership with Employment Hero, Deputy and Google will release new research examining how Australian SMEs are engaging with AI today, the productivity and workforce benefits available to those further along, and the barriers preventing broader adoption.

The research points to a substantial economic opportunity, with implications for productivity, workforce outcomes and Australia's competitiveness relative to international peers. The full report will be released at an event on Thursday 22 October 2026.

Our findings are the impetus for AI × SME: From Curiosity to Capability, taking place on Friday 23 October in Sydney, where the research will be translated into practical guidance, technology demonstrations and direct access to providers supporting SME adoption.
